about

This song discusses film as a cultural transmitter, and domesticated English remakes as a microcosm to the larger idea of cultural hegemony. Are we as Americans truly unable to read subtitles, let alone contend with the frightening concept of trying to learn another language, another perspective? In this light, many films are remade in a domestic framework, neither challenging intellect nor even allowing the aesthetic of foreign images to reach our eyes. With a huge population, only 30% of whom hold passports, are we turning further inward to avoid the discomfort of discovering anything different?

lyrics

whether the last refuge of scoundrels
or the victuals of skinny failures and potbellied successes
the colored cloth is first used to shrink-wrap the mind
then as a ceremonial shroud
everything in frame sanitized
articulated as such for the ease of relation
to limit oneself first and foremost
at the most critical confluence: of diversity and experience the scene the setting the origins obsolete
the most sincere effort to not learn anything
we’ve cast the net of culture wide and deep
and coated the world authoritatively
but how much is the journey worth
when more often than not
every city is painted like your own shitty block
