Track Name: I've Seen the Dust
You said you needed time to see it
It was clear that you couldn't go on
I watched you from far away --
saw you as you met the change
You were caught up in last year
Staggered stupid tough
You knew you couldn't keep the pace
Trying then to beat the way you got
You brought more than you could care to tell your friends about
You started to clean out
Set out on the hill and
the last time I saw you it seemed like you had grown
and now how do you know the way and the light now so
Heaven send at nightfall -- the grace you grew in time burns behind bright, I hope.
Heavy lies the heart now.
I know what I have done.
Believe me, my love.
I see it now.
I've seen the dust.
Track Name: Death Came as Two Dogs
I had a vision that death came as a dog
that snuck up on me and,
boy, we were done
the ragged breath is all that I can focus on
the bodies moving close
heartbeat in my throat
I've seen this one before --
it makes it all the more warm within my arms and sweet within the eye
I wouldn't know what then
I guess I'd step into the marsh
gamble with the mud
see if the tide wins.
I never heard a thing from you
that's why I walk this levee alone
I never heard a thing from you
that's why I didn't ask you
I never heard a thing from you
yet some times I get it right when it comes to this time of day.
I can't stay out all night
I know what happens then
less I would commit to clinging onto time
I'd close up every door
the windows taken care of
I'd find a bottle and see what it could do
I never heard a thing from you
that's why I walk this levee alone
I never heard a thing from you
that's why I didn't ask you
I never heard a thing from you
yet some times I get it right when it comes to this time of day.
Track Name: In Truth
You say that it is time to harvest --
it's a word I take issue with
I've seen you see the eyes look at you
and the words -- they don't match your breath
I understand condition and context
believe me, those are the things that shape the way that we see
I say -- compassion is what I seek
In truth
It seems like common sense to me -- In truth
I came up to think about such things now
how its more than just my next fill
It's not about the death that I fear, as a life that cannot be lived
I have seen this one up close
at a scale to know
to subjugate a being is a way I don't want to know.
In truth.
It seems like common sense to me.
In truth.
Track Name: Coast Live Oak
I've seen the leaves block the sky
burn into my eyes edges of light
backlit with a silvery dissolve
images to live on long gone
Long time I have spent -- far off and looking for you -- a view.
Branches spread, blackened from behind
a summer dips to autumn all the same
nodding to a spectacle array
that stays with me long after last light
All the time I have spent looking up at the sky.
Give me a reason why
I'm captive to driplines
The luminescence of what I have come to depend
The consistency of the waning light
through the canopy of an old coast live oak.
Track Name: Translucent
You were under for three days this past week.
It was quiet enough in that way.
You came strolling back with layers of black and tan
and I had to remember your face.
It was not the first time that I knew this --
there was a glimmer in your eye.
It shone brightly despite what I thought to perceive
there inside my own -- my mind.
I know how you're feeling.
Translucent cloth, flowing the wind.
I know how it is because I have been between.
Neither one had thought anything of it.
There are oceans apart from the lake.
I'd bust my hand climbing over that fence
to remind me where I am today.
I would hardly call that one a rainstorm.
The birds have enough to say now.
I imagine you out there with your friends, alone, passing the time through the night.
I know how you're feeling.
Translucent cloth, flowing in the wind.
I know how it is because I have been between.
Way out of line -- any way, I can find
the way I want to be
air you know -- fresh on your teeth.
Track Name: The Sun Finds Life
With the light coming on down on you
You know I've seen a thing or two
I've seen you off and seen you then
you think I lack it in my head.
It's worthless.
With narrow eyes I look at you -- a blurry face across the room.
An awesome word -- a power true.
I felt a doubt about myself.
Sometimes I lose my sight.
The sun finds life.
A darling word I held onto -- it's all I think I have at times.
I want to trust enough all-in -- the vote of confidence you gave.
It's something.
The sun finds life.
Even where it doesn't reach it finds life.
Track Name: Thylacine
I had seen a picture of you way back when.
I was taken by your stripes and realized
I did not understand much of your stature
your jaws open wide
your hind legs stretched behind.
I can see you standing back behind the chainlink.
It breaks my heart every time.
I think about the effects we don't expect and the times we don't try.
Thylacine -- it breaks my heart every time.
In my mind, I can see you there pacing.
I am aware that I have never seen you wild.
How can I live what I could call a penance?
How I long to see you alive.
I have returned to you for years now in my thoughts.
I see you from the side in black and white.
I miss you deeply, though I don't know much about you.
Though I would like to see.
Thylacine -- it breaks my heart every time.
Track Name: Baylands
When I turn it is all anew.
Egret legs (I count) and swallows, too.
I seldom cross the bridge at the turn.
I prefer the stormdrain outlet.
You find me as you can.
There's a ridgeline -- foggy fingers draping over.
There's a coolness on my neck.
It's what I seek.
I can see now -- because of everything.
Every day now
more or less
I strike out there.
With a bottle and a question and my best friend.
I will marvel at the changes in the season.
Always novel, always welcome on my skin.
You find me as you can.
There's a ridgeline -- foggy fingers draping over.
There's a coolness on my neck.
It's what I seek.
I can see now -- because of everything.
Track Name: Dark Horse Rising
Dark horse rising in the distance.
I can hear it breathing sharply.
I can't tell you much of anything --
that's the way how I've been seeing things.
Eyes grow wild -- can't see level.
A kaleidoscope channels daylight.
I can hear a change in the laughter.
I can't tell you much of anything -- anything at all.
Track Name: Dreams
I woke up -- an idea in my head.
I was not prepared for what was in store.
Every time I saw you as a friend
I had nothing that wasn't spent.
You had something I asked you to decide --
you showed me then what "powerless" meant.
Now to think that I wondered a lot...
if it was the best time I had.
I know that I wanted different things than I thought I had.
It's alright.
I think back on those times.
Everything seems strange now in my mind.
Waking hours don't permit me to see
the things that I now know in my sleep.
I'd be pressed to describe the events, yet they hold to my skin underneath.
I know how I wanted different things than I thought I had.
It's alright.
I think back on those times.
Everything seem strange now in my mind.
I can't even see you in my mind.
I don't even know what you look like.
